BCS on to State Again

With the exception of the Emerald City League Championships (where the BCS girls took 3rd), Jeannie Beth has improved with every race this season. She ran a great race at Lincoln Park on the 14th and followed that up at the end of the month with a 23:32.9 at the Tri-District Championships in a heavy rain on the American Lake Veterans Golf Course. Jean saved the day for BCS last year with a 23:32.1 and a 5th place team finish that earned the team a trip to State.  This year she ran in 7th place for BCS and the girls again captured the 5th and final qualifying team spot at State.

The BCS girls will be joined at State by senior Michael Milbank and sophomore Daniel Nortz .

Once again I will represent the Bellevue Reporter newspaper as their photographer in Pasco.  The end-of-season banquet is just three days after the State race so I'll be hard pressed to get my photographic work done in time.

Nathanael Peaks at Just the Right Time

Nathanael has had solid races all season, finishing as a scorer in each race except Sundodger.  His breakthrough race was the long 10K race at Bellingham described at the right.  His finish places on the SPU team this season have been 2nd, 6th, 1st, 3rd, 3rd, and 1st.  The GNAC Conference Championships are on November 6th.

Here is his record so far this season:

9/11  Apple Ridge Invite, Yakima  2nd team/28th overall  6K  21:10

9/18  Sundodger, Lincoln Park  6th team/69th overall  8K  26:59.27

9/25  Saint Martins Invite, Lacey  1st team/24th overall  8K  28:24

10/2  Charles Bowles Invite, Willamette  3rd team/124th overall  8K  26:31.37

10/9  WWU Preview, Bellingham  3rd team/26th overall  8K  27:24

10/23  Pre-Regionals, Bellingham  1st team/43rd overall  10K  33.57.4

The SPU athletics website  used my photo (right) of Nathanael from two weeks earlier on the same course.

And on October 30th, at he SPU XC Halloween dash, Nathanael won (again) for "Most Original Costume." He dressed up (and ran as) the Witch-king of Angmar, Lord of the Nazgul.

Election 2010

As early as Johnson vs. Goldwater (1964, age 9), I have enjoyed election night.  At age 5, I probably watched the Kennedy-Nixon returns but was too young to care.  I remember watching Chet Huntley and David Brinkley on ABC, until their team reporting ended in 1970.  But with the advent of mail-in ballots, I wonder if election night will have the same feel?

The question this year is, "can one trust the polls?"  If the polls are true (and truly reported) then a Republican/conservative landslide is in the offing on November 2nd.  My belief is that the public's reaction to the socialization of health care is at least as big a motivator to voters as the anemic economy.

A debtor nation cannot spend its way to prosperity.  There is a huge difference between spending as an investment that could produce future returns versus spending that supports dysfunctional systems.  Education is a good example.  Private education has proven (like at BCS and SPU) that a quality education can be provided at significantly less cost than that which is publically funded.  Only God, not government, does all things well.

Jean Sings

Jeannie Beth sings in both the girl's ensemble Bella Voce and the mixed Concert Choir.  She often says that Bella Voce is her favorite class in the day.

October Reading

Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848), has entertained me with his wit and philosophy this month. I read two more of his "Horatio Alger" styled sea tales.  Peter Simple and Percival Keene both got the girl, the fortune, the rank and the title, but only after many adventures.  The writing is light on character development and very fast paced.

Now I have begun his first book, Frank Mildmay.  I expected this to be of lower quality, but so far have found it perhaps better than his other three I've read.

In a typical week, I read for myself through Wednesday, then about Thursday I start studying for Bible study on Saturday.

Bits and Pieces

On October 30 we we have reached Revelation 20:4 on Saturday morning.  Chapters 17-18 proved to be the dark side of victory (the defeat of the enemy.)  We'll be back in the Psalms at Psalm 70 soon.

Weight loss in October did not happen.

My Quote from September

"Society set free from God is its own worst enemy."

Robert H. Mounce, The Book of Revelation (Revised) on chapter 14, verse 8.

(Toward the end of this month I switched to reading George Eldon Ladd's commentary on Revelation.)
