An Unexpected Election Win
for Donald J. Trump

I passed my boss, Dr. Stewart, and his Administrative Assistant, Kathy Stegman, on my way home at 3:30 on Election Day.  I said something like, "I've got to get home and start drinking before the results come in!"  Ross roared with laughter.

Ever since the 1964 presidential election, I have stayed up late to watch the national election results.  This year, I watched with great amusement as ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS news professionals all passed through stages of hope, confusion, doubt, and resignation as their long- prepared-for outcome did not come to pass.

In fact, I was prepared to watch an evening of Democratic rejoicing even as the polls had tightened in the days leading up to the final vote.  I voted by mail on November 3rd.

I started Election Night with one light beer, but put down five shots of 92 proof spiced rum as the evening dragged on without a victor being announced.  But finally, around 3:00 AM EST, (midnight our time), Hillary Clinton conceded the election -- even before some of the TV pundits called the election for Trump.  Not surprisingly, I slept well!

The truth is, I voted for Donald Trump after all, knowing, 1) my vote was meaningless as the State of Washington was sure to go for Mrs. Clinton, and 2) many of the attacks on Trump in the final weeks before the election were both desperate and baseless.  I could not vote for Hillary Clinton, a candidate who's policies I detested and whose behavior had repeatedly risen to the level of high crimes.

Christianity Today led with this on the day after the election.  “Exit polls suggest that "Never Trump" was never a likely outcome for white evangelical voters, who showed up to support President-elect Donald Trump at their highest margin since 2004. Despite reservations expressed by many evangelical and Republican leaders, white born-again/evangelical Christians cast their ballots for the controversial real estate mogul-turned-politician at an 81 percent to 16 percent margin over Hillary Clinton.”

Nancy was one of those evangelical voters who also voted for Donald Trump.  Neither candidate presented believable faith testimonies, although both tried, and both came across therefore as hypocritical in the extreme.

As a Republican PCO (precinct committee officer), Nancy was on the phones to her neighbors well into the late afternoon on election day.  I stayed out of her way.  She was the last to vote, driving her ballot over to the drop box at the Bellevue Library on the night of the election.

So far, I like what I'm seeing with the makeup of the Trump transition team and his other early moves.  It's too bad the other side are such sore losers.

Getting a Better Night's Sleep

Once each autumn, Nancy cleans up the house (a bit) to make it presentable for the plumber who comes to certify our backflow devices.  This is required due to our unique in-floor hot water heating system.  Well, this year she was in a hurry so she loaded much of the mess onto our bed in the master bedroom.  For a while, I tried sleeping in Annie's attic bedroom, but later moved to my basement recliner, and later a cot.  On the 10th, I received a twin sized air mattress I'd ordered from Wal-Mart.  I blew it up with our leaf blower and had a great night's sleep for the first time in a month.

I've found myself spending a lot of time in my basement office/library, especially now that it's also my bedroom.

Rethinking Our Family's Future

Nathanael moved to Renton on the 5th and Cynthia and her family brought up furniture on the 11th.  Certainly we would have been happy to donate furniture, but their place is only a one-bedroom apartment and we could fill it up in an instant.  Nate walks to Lindbergh High School but has his car in Renton to use for shopping, church, and to get to SPU once a week.  He has chosen to slow his degree program, stretching it out at least another year.

Apparently, with Nathanael gone, Annie and Thomas have discussed moving back in with us, once they are no longer needed at Susan's house to help care for Ginger.  While this came as a surprise, it was not an unwelcomed one.  Our huge house needs people, and making it their home too might encourage us to FINALLY get the junk cleared our and get the various rooms finished.  And it would shorten Annie's commute at least 15 minutes.

Jean does not expect to move out unless she were to be employed far away or she got married.  That event is not on the horizon.  But then, that was the case with Nancy on September 13, 1980.  Six months later, on March 14, 1981, she was a bride.

I'm content to rule my 9'x8' corner of the family room (my 1st floor office), enjoy hot showers, and putter and work in my basement cave.  Alas, it reminds me of the person I was when these words were heard on the radio in 1966, "I have my books / And my poetry to protect me; / I am shielded in my armor, / Hiding in my room, safe within my womb. / I touch no one and no one touches me. / I am a rock, I am an island. / And a rock feels no pain; / And an island never cries."

Jean Makes

Professional Moves

Jean has become a member of the Fern Theatre acting company.  She is exited with the prospect of having regular roles in this troupe which specializes in Shakespeare.  The Fern Theatre has just relocated from Atlanta, GA.

But before that opportunity bears fruit, she has a November-December gig as a Jingle Belle Dancer at Bellevue's Snowflake Lane nightly celebration.

This month, the Saturday Morning Men's Bible Study finished their early autumn study through Ecclesiastes, and before our next book, we studied Proverbs 8-10.  I have chosen to take the men through the book of Acts beginning just after Thanksgiving.  I am hoping that this will jump start my indepth study in preparation for my summer class at the Emerald Heights Retirement Community.  This schedule looks like a good one to guide my preparations.  But at the last minute I spotted that this coming summer there are nine weeks instead of eight.  So this schedule needs more work.

Bits and Pieces

♦   Here's yet another addition to my diet efforts.  I found a couple 1.62 oz. bottles of "Mio Energy liquid water enhancer" in the closeout bin at QFC.  It got me drinking more water, so I've gone online to buy other flavors from Wal-Mart.

   Death is a constant.  This month Leon Russell, singer; Robert Vaughn, actor; and Leonard Cohen, singer/songwriter passed away.  But I was shocked and very saddened to learn that PBS news anchor Gwen Ifill has passed away at the age of 61.  She hid her illness well.  It was odd to not see her on TV during the end of the election cycle.  Now we know why.  She was awesome, and, as a woman of faith, she's better off than those who remain.

   I had a rare sick day on the 15th.  Nancy was at a PEO meeting on the west side of the lake, so I had her come take me home.  It's not flu.  But lots of sleep can only help.

   This may be the final family photo (right) before Nathanael and Cynthia are wed.  Pastor George Hinman took this photo.  Susan will use it as her family Christmas photo.  The flowers behind us were given in memory of Ginger's 70th year at University Presbyterian Church, and in memory of Robert Van Eman Rutherford.

   (From USA Today Sports)  "With the Pac-12 North divisional title on the line, Washington walked into Pullman and crushed Washington State, 45-17, on Saturday. The Huskies took a 28-3 lead with four first-quarter touchdowns, . . .  UW built its lead with trick plays, efficiency, and sometimes complete bossings of WSU defenders.  It was never close. Chris Petersen’s Huskies didn’t look back, and they were able to coast to a win in front of a demoralized home crowd. The game was winner-take-all for the divisional title, and Washington took it. The Huskies will play either Colorado or USC in next Friday’s Pac-12 Championship Game (9:30 p.m. ET, FOX). That’ll be determined by the winner of Saturday’s Utah-Colorado game (7:30 p.m. ET, FOX), where the Buffs are win-and-in to face the Huskies.

 The Apple Cup is one of college football’s most glorious culture clashes. The problem with this game is that it wasn’t a clash, or a quarrel, on the field. It was just a demolition, and it was that way from the beginning."

The Sleight brothers greatly enjoyed the game on the 25th in true purple and gold style at Don's house.  We'll be back on Friday, December 2nd, for the    Pac-12 Championship Game against Colorado.  The Huskies are ranked #4 in the country and a win Friday will likely put them into the national championship playoff group of four.

   Jean is performing as a Jingle Belle at Bellevue's Snowflake Lane.  The big parade with Santa was on Black Friday.  I hope to get better photos in December.  She's already "won" the Smile Award that is given out nightly.

   Jean applied for a job at my church, Bellevue Presbyterian, where she was baptized.  A week later, on the 30th, she got an interview!  And now we wait to hear if she's got a great job four blocks from home!  Prayer & Care - Administrative Assistant: The Administrative Assistant for Prayer & Care provides general administrative support to the entire department.

My Quote from November

He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater,
He sendeth more strength when the labors increase;
To added afflictions He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.

When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources
Our Father’s full giving is only begun.

Fear not that thy need shall exceed His provision,
Our God ever yearns His resources to share;
Lean hard on the arm everlasting, availing;
The Father both thee and thy load will upbear.

His love has no limits, His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men;
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.

He Giveth More Grace   — Annie J. Flint

The School's Christmas Card

This year, I was asked to create a unique Christmas card for the School of Business, Government, and Economics. I was given a free hand with the design.  Figuring out how to include 38 photos symmetrically and festively was the challenge. The Dean and his Administrative Assistant were delighted with what I came up with.
