The 5th Dean of SBE will be . . .

If I knew I would tell you.  Four candidates were interviewed, and recommendations were sent to the provost on May 24th, but no announcement has been forthcoming.  No doubt there are delicate negotiations underway, but rumor and apparent leaks were the order of the day on the 30th.  Dr. Daniels reported on the 31st:

Friends,

Many of you have asked me about the timeline for the dean search process.  I’ve spoken with both Jeff Van Duzer and Micheal Roe today, and wanted to share with you that progress is being made.  This week Jeff and Dan Martin both had good conversations with the candidate who was recommended by the dean search committee, and I’m fairly confident that we will have clarity on outcome by early next week. I know this has been a tough season of uncertainty.  I continue to be very grateful for our colleagues who put many hours in on the search itself, and especially for Micheal Roe who went way above and beyond the call of duty as the chair of the search committee on top of his regular responsibilities in SPFC.

Denise Daniels, Ph.D.
Interim Dean

Beta Gamma Sigma, May 7, 2013

This month I was formally inducted as a faculty member into the national business honor society, Beta Gamma Sigma.  Every SBE faculty member I spoke with said this was long overdue.

Here I am with Dr. Regina Schlee, SPU Chapter ΒΓΣ President.  I believe it was her idea to nominate me, but our interim Dean Dr. Daniels, and the Chapter Secretary Dr. Karns, with whom I work very closely, were genuinely pleased to have me join.

Bellevue Christian Boys Bring Home Surprise
3rd Place Trophy from State Track & Field

BCS senior Daniel Nortz (left), grandson of senator Slade Gorton, ended his magnificent high school running career with the State title in the 800m run.  This amazing race will long be remembered by those who were there.  The lead runner, junior Logan Owens from Riverside, began his victory celebration about three yards early and Daniel kicked past him in a final wild sprint and won by 0.15 seconds.  And I was there to get the picture.

Similarly, senior Scott Miller, on his final throw of 163'-8" in the discus, moved from 3rd place to 1st to win that State title.  He also took 5th in the javelin and 6th in the shot put.  His 17 points in these three events put Bellevue Christian in the hunt for a trophy.  Only the top four of sixty eight schools come home with hardware.

Our lone Lady Viking, freshman Courntey Porter, took 2nd in both the 100m high hurdles and the 300m low hurdles.  She will anchor the BCS girls team for three more years. Only five of our boys had a part in scoring our 33 point total.  But it was just enough for 3rd place.  Riverside won the final event and took 4th with 32 points.  And tied with 31 points were the two teams that had beaten us at the Nisqually League championships (Eatonville) and at the Tri-District championships (arch rival King's).  It was a fabulous four day mini-vacation for team photographer "Doc" Sleight.

Susan Scratches the Remodeling Itch

Susan has five bedrooms and five bathrooms on five acres on the west edge of Redmond near Totem Lake.  But she has such a gift of hospitality that she's expanding her living room at the expense of a portion of her very large east-facing deck.

Her living room and music room are now walled off from the rest of the house so the construction can be completed without disturbing Susan and Ginger.  The furniture is in the garage, and her piano is wrapped up tight as a drum. (Did I just write that?!)

When finished, the raised music area will look out to both the north and east over a much enlarged living room.

Bits and Pieces

♦  Coach Kris DeJonge had this comment in an email: "The pics I saw looked awesome & the student voted awards looked great.  Amazing work & like Larry said when I showed him...the bar is set really high with the track awards!  You do a great job.  Thank You. Thank you. Thank You!!"  And speaking of Coach Larry Royce.  This season marked his final one of an amazing 37.

♦  I taught two two-hour Excel classes to graduate students this month.  It required some extra training on my part, but I'm gratified that the school is FINALLY recognizing that graduate business students need spreadsheet skills, perhaps even more than the undergraduates.

♦  I'm slowly getting the hang of editing a database-driven web site.  What a chore when you can't edit your work in WYSIWYG mode.

My Quote from May

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:

As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;

Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,

His truth is marching on."

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

His truth is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;

He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:

Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!

Our God is marching on.
