Introducing
Charis Lorien Disher

Labor was progressing steadily for Annie at Evergreen Hospital.  Thomas had driven her in after lunch on the 6th.  She did most of the  hard work of labor, but opted for an epidural toward 7:00PM.  When it came time to deliver Baby Disher, however, it was decided a C-section was necessary.  Aunt Susan had arrived at the hospital and concurred with Annie's doctor's decision.  From that point, delivery was very quick.  Annie's epidural allowed her to be awake for the birth.

Grandparents Bob, Kim, Nancy, and I waited near Annie's hospital room all afternoon and evening. Jean was caring for Grandma (now Great Grandma) Ginger.

Annie was a few more days at the hospital due to the surgery.  Charis (Greek for "grace") has, of course, become the center of attention all though the holidays.

Jean Turns 25

Jean was quite willing to let much of the attention at her 25th birthday party on the 9th go to her niece Charis.

She was happy that they don't share the same birthdate, but she expects that in the years to come, they may share many birthday parties.

Jean has every intent to be "the fun aunt."

Jean Takes Her Show on the Road

On the night of the 27th, Jean took American Airlines to Philadelphia, transferred on to Albany, NY, and the next morning caught a shuttle to Lenox, Massachusetts, close to the New York boarder.

She's having the trip of a lifetime to study acting on the Shakespeare & Company campus.  It's described as, a "storied Shakespeare-centric theater company, boasting 3 stages, actor training and nature walks."

A beautiful setting indeed, but on this last day of December, Lenox, MA, has a high of 4° and a low of -9°.

A White Christmas!

Nancy declared this the most relaxing Christmas in memory.  Part of that may have been caused by using last year's "Charlie Brown" tree (left).  We left it on the deck with a single ornament, and God decorated it with snow.  It began snowing on Christmas Eve and we enjoyed a beautiful white Christmas. The roads remained passable and was mostly gone by Boxing Day.

Charis remained the center of attention, often demanding it with her pleas for dinner.  We broke a record with fifteen around the Christmas dinner table, (16 if you count Charis).  There were more Dishers than Sleights if you count Charis, or a tie if we count Baby Sleight due in June.

Annie, Thomas, and Charis reprised the scene of the Holy Family that Jean, Nancy, and I acted out back in 1992.

Bits and Pieces

♦   As I walked home on Monday the 11th, I saw that the house east of us, that we had almost bought, was being demolished.  This shot was taken over our east fence with a flash about 4:30PM.  1225 100th Ave. NE will be replaced on our east side.   I also understand that demolition of 1234 99th Ave. NE on our west side may begin in two months.  We will be bracketed this spring by new construction.

The two shots looking west were taken two days later.  Other than making it clear that our east side needs a new paint job, this may be the last chance I have of photographing that side.  The new construction may be tall since they have not dug a basement.

♦   The business school went above and beyond, sending flowers and a balloon to celebrate Charis with us.

♦  The new photo wall off of the McKenna Hall foyer was a project I had intended to complete in August.  But when sufficient parts could not be ordered, we had to wait until Christmas break.  I oversaw the design, and prepared the new photos.  Everyone seems happy with the new, modern upgrade to our business school Faculty/Staff photo display.

 My Quotes from December

"Quiet people have the loudest minds." — Stephen Hawking

"That's the thing about introverts; we wear our chaos on the inside where no one can see it."

— Michaela Chung

"My observation is that whenever one person is found adequate to the discharge of a duty... it is worse executed by two persons, and scarcely done at all if three or more are employed therein."
