Mom comes home to 1228 99th

From November 5th to December 21st, mom alternated stays at Swedish Hospital and the Park West skilled nursing center in West Seattle.   On the Friday night before Christmas she came home to our house.

When our house was originally designed, we had planned for this day.  The library was to be the bedroom for an elderly parent.  Well, the library is still unfinished so we put mom's hospital bed (borrowed from Susan) into the family room.  It will move to the living room when we get the finish on the northwest section of flooring that Nancy completed this month.  The wheelchair ramp was also part of the original design to this end.

Mom's blood sugar is better here than it was at Park West.  At month's end she seems to be slowly getting over the nasty cold she brought with her (and gave to me.)  As I often say (at least to myself), "this is a test, if it had been an actual emergency..."  It is the right thing to do, despite the adjustments to our lifestyle.  Children caring for parents should be the norm for healthcare in a healthy society.  It's the last act to fulfill the commandment, "Honor thy father and thy mother..."

What a Difference
Ten Pounds Makes

I just marvel at Nathanael's attitude.  No other athlete, from any team, starts each match with a grin like his!  I imagine it's downright unnerving to his opponents.  He is like a cat that is just waiting for the mouse to twitch and then he attacks with a vicious joy.

Last year Nathanael was in the 135 lb. weight class and occasionally "wrestled  up" at 140.  This season he is locked into the 145 lb. class and has sometimes been asked to wrestle up to 152, which accounts for two of his early losses.  His record for December was 12-3 and eleven of those twelve victories were by pin!  In his three losses he has not been pinned.

Most of Nate's pins have been with very good fundamental technique, as in the top three photos on the right.  And he's also thrown in his cradle move that he mastered last season.
In the bottom photo he was clearly dominating his Tahoma opponent in the third period but did not quite get the pin or make up the deficit he had allowed in periods one and two.

In the middle photo he's pinning an incredibly well-muscled opponent from Darrington.  Nate had lost his second match and had to work his way up through the losers bracket in the As Iron Sharpens Iron Tournament to qualify for this match for 3rd place. It was his fourth match of the day.  He reasoned that this Darrington Hercules had also lost one match so he must be strong but less talented a wrestler.  Nate wrestled him very carefully for three minutes.  But then Mr. Muscles began to tire (he should have run Cross Country) and Nate made quick work of him.

The annual trip to Coulee Dam to wrestle in the Powerhouse tournament on the 27th  was canceled at the last minute due to hazardous winter travel conditions over the passes.  I had hoped to ride with the team but Nancy insisted on going too.  I'm glad I had put off booking a motel room.

BCS is already 7-2 in duals with wins over Shelton, South Whidbey, Lakewood, Wilson, Lincoln, Nooksack Valley and Meridian and losses to Kentridge and Tahoma.  The season covers just December and January, with the district, regional, and state championships on consecutive weekends in February.

Laurie and Katherine Flew By

Laurie and Katherine flew to Seattle from Maryland in mid-month to visit mom.  They stayed with Don and Judy and visited mom at Park West.

They made a quick stop at our place and were content with the hamburgers I cooked up for them.

It was clear to Laurie that bringing mom to our house was the best solution available.   The whole extended Sleight family readily agreed. Dad would not be able to take care of her.  And he had hoped to have her stay with us at least for a few weeks even before the crisis of November arrived.

The Monthly House Update

The house on our west side has its first floor framed and is going to grow.  It's a big house on a small lot so there is a tiny backyard.  I hope they build a tall fence.

Christmas '07

Christmas starts for me with cookie baking.  This year I baked for the majority of two days.  I knew things would get hectic so I took the 14th and 17th off from SPU to help get ready for the holidays.

The holiday week was capped by our family trip to see The Nutcracker.  The trip was a gift from the Cross Country parents (to the tune of $185!) on December 28th.

I found the ballet disappointing.  So many folks enjoy it as a "Christmas" tradition yet there is nothing of Christ in it.  The dancing was not as strong as that in a regular Pacific Northwest Ballet performance, but I did enjoy the sets. No doubt my weak eyesight did not make me the best judge.

The Sleight family party was held on the 23rd, again at Don and Judy's.   Little Timmy Ellis was a hit.  Grandma Jean mostly stayed at the dining room table.  Jon and Sarah and their girls had to leave early so we did not have our customary carol sing-a-long.

I'd made a DVD of seven of Nathanael's wrestling matches to show.  He made a big impression on (and new friends of) Chris' sons Max and Quinn.

We also watched an ultrasound movie of Lance and Debbie's girl due in the spring.

On our own Christmas day we did not rush off anywhere but spent the whole day at home.  I liked that.  Dad and Randy joined us for lunch and Ginger and Susan surprised us with a visit too.  It was a nice big gathering.  Nancy and the kids had gone to the UPC Christmas Eve children's service while I stayed home with mom. Sundays have also had this pattern.

As an indication of how backed up we are -- Nate cut our Christmas tree down on Christmas Eve from the big Douglas Fir out front and they were putting light on at midnight.  Most of the ornaments were added on Christmas Day.

One surprise was especially welcomed.  A light dusting of SNOW on Dec. 25th!

Bits and Pieces

  • Nathanael learned on the 29th that he has been accepted into SPU.  We had no doubt, but we held it over his head a bit to get him to get his application in on time.  He's got great grades and a high SAT score. He wants to study Physics, and he's male.  Of course SPU wants him!  It's the only college to which he applied.
  • December 29th we also got our first visit from Jessie Villasin RN, BSN, CCM of Evergreen Healthcare.  He's the visiting nurse who will act as the case worker for Jean.  They will also send a Physical Therapist, Social Worker, and Occupational Therapist.
  • After Christmas, Annie and I went out to look for a laptop computer for her.  We found an HP model dv2617us that had all the features she was looking for.   We found it at OfficeDepot at $599 -- down from $899 after all of the discounts and rebates. She wanted the 14.1" monitor size (small) so she could carry it around the British Isles in the spring and Spain in August.

●  At SPU this month I began to take new portraits of all of the business school faculty and staff.  I'm about half way done with the 25 folks so far.
Dr. Doug Downing snapped my new official SBE photo.

Special thanks to Annie for seven of the photographs above (and left.)

My Quote from November

There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, "Thy will be done,"
and those to whom God says, "All right, then, have it your way."
